Bartlett Pears by Margaret White

Artwork Description

Margaret White's still lifes are legendary, from their detail to their color. "Bartlett Pears" is no exception. This mixed media work is 18.5 inches wide by 23.5 inches high. It sells for $2,700, which includes free shipping.

Margaret White says there are no hidden messages or meanings in her paintings; she just paints what she likes. Often, that is fruit or vegetables, but it also includes the human figure and face, flowers, birds, insects and jewelry. She uses gold leaf extensively as well as arches without the religous subject matter. Oil pastel is her favorite medium and she likes incising and shaving with a knife to add details and textures.

Margaret White said she always knew she had talent and is grateful that the Detroit Public Schools in the 1950s and '60s were able to help her build that talent through after-school and weekend classes. She graduated from Cass Technical High School, where she majored in art. Shen then received her BFA and MA from Michigan State University. She also has studied printmaking, art history and techniques.

Margaret White taught high-school drawing for 30 years in Southfield, Mich.

Margaret White is married to William White, another Fine Art Mart artist. He is an oil painter. They live in Torch Lake near Traverse City.

One unique aspect of Margaret White's work is her use of vintage frames. She says she's a "picker" rather than a "slap-dasher" and loves how people react to the detail in her work.

"To be an artist all my life has brought me so much joy and fulfillment," Margaret says. "My goal is to keep at it until I keel over."
