From traditional watercolors depicting northern Michigan scenes, to large abstract oil paintings, Charlie Murphy’s range of medium and subject matter is boundless. His frequent incorporation of fiber and other elements to create texture, adds further excitement to his work. As a teacher, book illustrator and artist, Charlie is well known and appreciated throughout Michigan.
Murphy grew up in southern Minnesota and always wanted to be a painter. His grandfather was one of his earliest inspirations. He graduated from Minnesota State University with a BFA in studio art, and then spent time in Cape Cod, Mass.
For several years, Murphy made the art fair circuit, winning honors and a large following. His work is now in corporate collections at Kraft, General Motors, Prudential and John Hancock.
While working on his career as a painter, he also made money as a furniture- and cabinet-maker. He also traveled to find inspiration for his work, including Europe, Nova Scotia, Hawaii and the Caribbean. Murphy has illustrated books and taught many classes and workshops.
