Artwork Description

Margaret White's "Lace Cap" is an oil-pastel original painting in a vintage oval frame. It's 13 inches wide by 16 inches high and sells for a newly reduced price of $850 from $1300. Fine Art Mart offers free shipping on this painting.

Margaret White grew up in Detroit in the 1950s and early '60s, when the Detroit Public Schools offered after-school and weekend courses to help her cultivate her talent. She graduated from Cass Technical High School, where she majored in art. She went on to Michigan State University, receiving a BFA and MA, and also studied printmaking at Wayne State University. She taught drawing in high school in Southfield, Mich., for 30 years. "If you REALLY want to learn something, teach it for five hours a day for years," she says.

She says there aren't any hidden messages or deep meanings in her work. "I paint what I love and what makes me happy," she says. Her images reflect her love of the human figure, color, texture, pattern and her fascination with the process.

Margaret White prefers oil pastel as her media choice, and uses the techniques of incising and shaving with a knife to attain various details and textures.

She is married to William White, an oil painter also represented by the Fine Art Mart. They have a retirement home on Torch Lake, near Traverse City, Mich.

Vintage frames, like the one with "Lace Cap," are a unique aspect of Margaret White's work. Many are hand-painted to complement the painting.
