Equestrian by Margaret White

Artwork Description

Margaret White's "Equestrian" is a great example not only of her talent as a painter, but of the attention she gives to the frames. "Equestrian," an original oil-pastel painting, has a black and gold matte frame with filet. It is 14 inches high by 17 inches wide and costs $600. Fine Art Mart offers free shipping on this painting.

Margaret White's subject matter ranges from human figures to faces to birds, insects and jewelry. She prefers oil pastel as her medium and uses incising and shaving with a knife to get details and textures into her work.

Margart White says she knew from an early age that she had talent and is grateful that the Detroit Public Schools in the 1950s and early '60s offered after-school and weekend courses to foster that talent. She was accepted into Cass Technical High School, where she majored in art. "It was an amazing experience," she says.

She went on to earn a BFA and MA from Michigan State University and also studied printmaking at Wayne State University. She taught high school art for 30 years in Southfield, Mich.

Margaret White is married to William White, an oil painter also represented by Fine Art Mart. They have a retirement home, complete with art studios, on Torch Lake in northwest Lower Michigan.

Margaret White calls herself a "picker" rather than a "slap-dasher" and loves how people react to the detail in her work. She revels in the meticulousness.

"To be an artist all my life has brought me so much joy and fulfillment," Margaret says. "My goal is to keep at it until I keel over."
